RESEARCH GOAL

Applying microbiology and molecular biology knowledge to investigate effective medical treatments and cleantech solutions to control nosocomial infections caused by mutidrug resistant bacteria. Phage therapy is an alternative treatment for controlling infection by these organisms.  A. baumannii is a gram-negative bacterium widespread in the surroundings of our everyday life.  Because multi-drug resistant A. baumannii (MDRAB) isolates have been found to increase in Taiwan since its first report in 1998 on the island, alternative treatment is necessary for treating infections by this organism.  Therefore, in my research, several bacteriophages specifically infecting A. baumannii have been isolated.  Feasibility in using these phages in phage therapy is being evaluated.  A part of the results obtained recently in my laboratory had been published.
